Spring Cleansing | What to Do When it's All Too Much

With the start of spring comes rebirth, fresh air, new beginnings, and spring cleaning. After cold and dark winters, it’s so refreshing to clean your space and open the windows. But what if we took it one step further? What if we not only cleaned out space, but cleared our mind as well? (And why not our body, while we’re at it?) How about a spring cleansing?

 

Today, I’ve put together a list of 11 things to do to help cleanse your space, body, and mind. Not only are these things good for the beginning of spring, but they can also help when you’re feeling brunt out, stressed, or just need to take some time to re-center yourself.

 

 

 

TAKE A BREAK FROM THE MEDIA

By this I mean, don’t go on social media of any kind and don’t turn on the TV or watch YouTube videos. SO much negativity can come from the media and it can drain us and depress us. I challenge you to go a whole day without the media. A weekend is even better. A whole week would be amazing if you have the ability to do so. (I have not tried. Yet.)

An easier version of this would be to just take a break from social media. That one is a bit easier to go a whole week without. I went a week without social media and I gotta say, I was pretty happy with the results. Of course, it will take a lot of practice to consistently manage my social media intake, and probably some more resets.

If you want to go extreme, try going without technology! Even for just a day. You’ll be amazed to discover how much you rely on these things without even thinking. And you’ll have plenty of time to discover things about yourself that you might not have realized.

 

 

CLEAN YOUR SPACE

Whether it’s just your room or your house, cleaning your space can seriously help clear your mind. Dust and vacuum. Clean your windows. Deep clean your bathroom and your kitchen. De-clutter. Go through your closet and donate (not throw away) clothes you don’t want anymore. Sort through and recycle all those random piles of paper. Change your sheets. Put away the little piles of random things you were too lazy to take care of before. (I’m am guilty of accumulating many little piles of randomness.) I’m telling you, you will feel a lot better once you are living in a freshly clean space.

 

 

JOURNAL

This is one of my favorites to do. Get a notebook, find a quiet place, and just write down anything and everything that comes to mind. Mind dump all over the page. You can put a limit on yourself if you feel it’s necessary; like a time limit of 20 minutes or an hour or to a certain number of pages. Or you can just write until you feel like there’s nothing left in your mind to write about.

I journal about all kinds of things. I write about the previous day or how I’m feeling at that moment. I use it to work through any problems I’m having. I even use it to brainstorm creative ideas. If it’s taking up space in my brain, I like to write it down so I don’t get so stressed.

 

 

TAKE A BATH

This one is pretty simple. I like to take Epsom salt baths to do a little body cleansing. I use 1 to 2 cups of Epsom salt in hot water, ½ a cup of baking soda, and a few drops of essential oils. (Lavender is the best for calming.) I put on some relaxing music, close my eyes, and just lay there for 20 to 40 minutes. Then I rinse off, put on some lotion, and feel absolutely refreshed. Of course you can go about a bath however you would like, the only rule is that you relax.

 

 

DANCE IT OUT

Literally dance like no one’s watching. Put on songs you love that have a good beat and just let go for a little bit. Be ridiculous and just have fun. Feel free.

 

 

EXERCISE

I know. Everyone tells you to do it, but it can be so beneficial! And even if you feel sore afterward or feel like you’re going to die during it, you will feel so accomplished. I love the feeling after a workout and it helps me relieve stress. Plus it’s good for the body! There are all kinds of exercise out there for all different levels. I’m sure you can find something that you enjoy. And you should enjoy it!

 

 

GET A PLANT

Another pretty simple task. I have a few plants that I just enjoy watering and taking care of. Sure most of the time I don’t actually do anything with them, but they provide a nice, green vibe, especially during the dreary, winter months. Plus a lot of plants have environmental benefits like cleaning the air of toxins and pollutants. But, if you don’t like the idea of getting a plant or absolutely cannot keep one alive, then no worries, fake plants can still help brighten up a room with out needing any work. (I have plenty of fake plants too.)

 

 

 

GO FOR A WALK OR HIKE

Just get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Walk around your neighborhood, take your dog for a walk, go to a nearby park. You can literally walk anywhere. Just pick a direction and go! I enjoy going for hikes at local nature areas myself. I recommend checking out Indian Lake County Park, Gibraltar Rock, Ferry Bluff, and Natural Bridge State Park. All are entirely free to go to. No sticker required.

 

 

TAKE CARE OF SMALL TASKS

You know the ones. They’re the ones that would take hardly any time to do, but you just keep putting them off for one reason or another. So, make a list of all the nuisances you need to do and do them. Make that appointment, file those papers away, backup your hard drives. Even those slightly larger tasks like doing your taxes. Take a day (or two) and just go down the list. You will feel so much lighter once they are all taken care of.

 

 

MEDITATE/PRAY

Connect with your spirituality or your faith. There are so many ways this can be done and it’s all tailored to you and what you believe. And do it in the way you want to, not the way someone else says you should. That’s the whole point of belief anyway, isn’t it? That it’s up for interpretation, there is no wrong way of doing it. So connect with yourself or your higher power and see what amazing things happen.

 

 

FINALLY, DO A HOBBY YOU ENJOY

Again, fairly simple and probably fairly obvious, but I’m still recommending it. Do something you enjoy for the pure sake of enjoying it. Read a book, do some gardening, bake that new recipe you’ve wanted to try. Paint, write, draw, go biking, or canoeing. Seriously! Whatever it is you like to do, go do it. There’s nothing better to re-center yourself with than doing something you enjoy.

 

 

I hope you take the time to try at least one of these things out. I have done them all at one time or another and try to continue incorporating them into my daily life.

There comes a time in all of our lives when everything becomes too much and we need to take a step back from it all and relax. It helps keep us mentally and physically healthy. And when we are feeling our best, then we can go out into the world and do amazing things.
