You may read the title of this post and wonder, "what the heck is the ugly location challenge?" Well, it's when you go out with the intent of finding unappealing looking places and take portraits there. The point is to work on finding a way to make any location look better than it really is. So, when I saw this I thought that I should absolutely give it a try. I contacted one of my photographer friends and we spent the day going to a couple different stores, taking pictures of each other. It was a bit awkward having people look at us like we were doing something weird. (Well, we kinda were.) But, it was a fun experience and I'm hoping to try it again sometime.
We went to a hardware store and practically wander the entire place looking for spots that would work. The employees probably thought we were lost.
THE LIGHTING SECTION
(I think these are my favorites)
THE PAINT SECTION
This was out next stop. I had a bit of a difficult time getting places to work for me while in this store, but that's ok. It just means I need to keep trying at it. The first two portraits are the ones I think worked out the best, but I will show the others so you can see what else I tried.
THE CRAFT STORE
This was by far the easiest place for me, it almost felt like cheating. Who knew that craft stores were filled with such pretty and interesting things!
I think this photoshoot went pretty well for trying something like this for the first time. I would love to try it again and go to different places because it was actually a lot of fun as well as a good exercise.
So what do you think? Did I do these places any justice or could you totally tell I was taking pictures in a store? What places do you think I should try next? Leave your comments down below! I would love to hear what you think!
